Hezbut Tawheed USA Protests at UN, Urges Protection for Members Amid Rising Extremist Violence in BD

New York, USA — On October 7, 2024, Hezbut Tawheed USA organized a poignant human chain at the United Nations Headquarters, demanding urgent action from Secretary-General António Guterres against escalating extremist attacks on its members in Bangladesh. The demonstration aimed to highlight the alarming violence and persecution faced by the movement, which has seen intensified assaults from radical factions seeking to eliminate its influence.

The Hezbut Tawheed movement, known for its non-political religious reform initiatives, has been under siege in the Noakhali District, where extremists have threatened the life of its leader, Honorable Imam Hossain Mohammad Salim. Recent attacks have included threats to destroy the Imam’s residence, vandalism of eight district offices, and assaults on approximately fifty families, resulting in damages amounting to millions of Bangladeshi Taka.

Harun A Rashid, a representative of Hezbut Tawheed USA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to promoting interfaith harmony, women’s inclusion, and cultural initiatives. “Over the past decade, we have conducted 200,000 public awareness meetings against religious extremism. This stance has made us targets for violent extremists,” Rashid stated.

The situation has worsened, with extremists staging unlawful assemblies near the Imam’s home and demanding that Hezbut Tawheed members vacate the area. These threats are reminiscent of past incidents dating back to 2016, where false rumors led to looting, the destruction of a mosque, and the murder of two members, with no justice served.

Rashid emphasized the urgent need for international intervention, particularly to protect vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly from ongoing persecution and violence. The demonstration showcased powerful testimonies from Hezbut Tawheed USA members, calling for immediate action to safeguard human rights and prevent further violence in Bangladesh.
